CLUBS
Don't know which club to go on a weekend? Here are just some of the local clubs worth checking out...

NOX (11 MOHAMED SULTAN ROAD Phone: 835 2823)
This dance club has fostered quite a reputation for itself. Originally known as a snooty place that only let in hip and cool people, Nox has gotten past that, and are now known for their eclectic range of dance music and some of their hard rockin' parties. They have hosted quite a few guest DJs, as well as quality local talent. The crowd here tends to come in a bit late, but usually the place is packed by midnight. The decor is very slick and shiny, and so are many of the people who frequent this groovy dance spot. |

AMOEBA (207 RIVER VALLEY ROAD #01-59/60 Phone: 835 2823)
A nice, swanky joint with ex-MTV host Nadya as co-owner. It's quite a celebrity hangout at the moment. The decor is very groovy, with velvet booths lining the walls. There's a separate dance floor and all the toilets are unisex. There's a good selection of champagnes, with some fantastic champagne cocktails. A must-try is the Bellini. The DJ spins mainly Garage and Deep House, which keep the crowd happy. Besides basking in the swanky bar area or sinking into one of the plush booths, the dance floor is suitably cosy, and with its dim lighting and soft plush walls, it should keep you safe from harm. Only members are allowed in on Fridays and Saturdays, in order to keep the place from getting too crowded. But don't worry, if you're not a member and you'd like to hang out there with friends on a weekend, just ring up and ask for your name to be put on the guest list

SUGAR (13 MOHAMED SULTAN ROAD Phone: 8360010)
If you ever chance upon Sugar, you will notice the entire club defies pigeon-holing, which is the intention of the management. It is dissected into three areas, each with a distinctive identity of its own. As you pass the door, the dimly-lit Renaissance-like curves of the ceiling and walls draws your attention with its architectural splendour. Into the electrifying hub you go where the swinging party folks gear up for action surrounded by the shimmering sterling walls which conforms with the futuristic and linearly-shaped tables. The definitive glamorous decor item - crystal balls descending to a low level at irregular intervals - is a source of constant fascination for the grooving denizens of Sugar. The music is a blistering mix of 70s disco, soul, and garage. To seek a momentary solitude, step outside at the back door to the almost-serene courtyard. Sweet. |

LUSH (9 KIM YAM ROAD Phone: 733 6388)
Lush is co-owned by Michael Lu of Elite Model Management and Simon Lim of Wong San's. This groovy bar is designed by Hans Brouwer of HB Design and is clearly aimed to impress with its provocative, visual drama. With it's double height ceilings and an exclusive upper deck, all of Lush's 260 capacity VIP guests will be able to luxuriate in the trendy but comfortable designer surroundings. The lighting is intimate and sensous, and the sound, sexy. The eight-metre long bar and the "soaring wing" feature column are clad in "Lumicite". This bar is softly lit from the inside and is an impressive first sight for guests when they enter the premises

VELVET UNDERGROUND (17 JIAK KIM STREET Phone: 7382988)
The crowd that hang here are very trendy and slightly more mature than the ones who haunt Zouk and Phuture. Velvet is very slick, and with the DJs spinning a good blend of deep house and garage, it's good for hitting the dance floor. Equipped with a chill out room and lots of comfy little seats, this place is also good for lounging around if you don't feel like boogying. It still gets pretty crowded, so you'd better be uncool and get here a bit earlier than everyone else if you want to get a seat. There are two bars though, so it's slightly easier to get a drink. With their red velvet walls, colourful seats and slick bar stools, this place reeks of glamour and style. The party vibe's pretty good and so is the music.

SULTAN OF SWING (5 MAGAZINE ROAD #01-02/03 CENTRAL MALL Phone: 557 0828)
This place now joins the growing hub of nightspots in Central Mall and has brought new life to this previously more sedate area. Started by the same person who gave us Madam Wong's, SOS is just as massive (actually, it's even more massive). Having only been open for a few months, they've already created quite a buzz with some of the parties they've thrown. There's a dance floor, a huge bar area, plus an outdoor chill-out space if you'd like to unwind or just spend a few minutes recuperating before plunging back into the fray. They have an exclusive spot for members to drink and play pool without having to fight the rest of the crowd that occupy the bar and dance vicinities. With sushi and cool bar snacks, you won't go hungry here. Despite how huge it is, it gets really packed so you still end up fighting for space, but the crowd's good and it's always fun. If you're partying at Mohammed Sultan and are just too lazy to hike over, there's now a bus which takes you to the doorstep of this happening new night spot. Pretty convenient, wouldn't you say?

CLUB EDEN (25 MOHAMED SULTAN ROAD Phone: 738 0720)
Located right next door to Tajie, Club Eden is up there with the style factor. The experience starts when you enter the outdoor area before proceeding insdie to the club. With nice-looking wooden seats and beautifully cultivated foliage, you then step inside, where the interior resembles that of a underground club in New York. When first in, you come across a lounge area and if you venture further in, you'll find the dance floor, filled with gyrating bodies. There are two bars, and the length of this club seems to stretch on forever. Try some of their signature drinks like Citrus Sin, Adam's Apple, or the shooter Serpant's Bite. They serve a small selection of finger foods to go with the drinks, but lots more is in store for this brand new club, which already has a pool of regulars and people lining up outside just dying to get in and bask in the true beauty of Club Eden.
